So how many times have you faced this situation? You have a dream, a dream to die for, but surprisingly the people who matters most to you are not ready to understand. In worse case, they even discourage you to pursue your dream! I know how you feel. I have gone through or you can say going through same situation. When I started following my dream of being an Entrepreneur(something my parents had never heard of!), my parents panicked! "How can you reject your placement offer from your college? What do you think of yourself? Bill Gates II?" Once I used to feel very bad about all these things. But then I read life story of many successful persons. And wow! Most of them have same stories! But none of them stopped following their dreams.
I feel very sad, when I hear someone who says " I had to sacrifice my dreams for my Family/Parents/Spouse...etc" So I thought of doing something that can inspire everybody to NEVER GIVE UP their DREAMS and also make us understand that WE SHOULD RESPECT AND CO-OPERATE OTHER'S DREAMS...even if that's not exactly what we wanted them to do.
I requested my friends to express their view on this topic. And their reply was awesome and really inspiring. Let me share those with you:
My friend Sourav asked to write about this subject.
I must say, that one of life's most terrible ordeals, is when we are wholeheartedly convinced that our way is in one direction, and everybody around us seems to have (and sometimes, wants to impose) a different direction to our dreams!
Of course I am not saying one should not be sensible and use common sense, but very often if dreams are not pursued and lived, one ends up with a life not lived, a head full of resentment and a sad heart.
Given this, what would be a good advice?
Well, first of all, do not precipitate yourself. Analyse well and probe deep into your hearts.
Is this dream what you really want to do?
What is there in your life that can support your choice (for instance, it has to do with your studies, or someone in the family has had the same dream, or does that job, a friend is able to give you a hand, etc...).
Then, visualise what you would love to do.
Come back to reality and try to understand and detail all that is contrary to your dream (for instance, it was not what you studied, your family does not agree, or whatever else).
Go by parts. What can be solved?
For instance, you can get a position and still study to become later what you dream of?
If your family is against it, is someone in the family a bit more open, who could help bring others around to your vision of your future? Or is there a teacher or friend (older friend) who can help convince the family?
Another thing that may help is the following:
When we dream, it may seem to other people, who saw their own dreams frustrated, as if we are "having things easy" - these people sometimes try to stop others from having what they could not reach. But if they can sense that in us, their dreams also come true, maybe we can turn around their anger into something that can be positive.
Also, sometimes they feel we are only dreaming dreams because somebody else is paying for our food and house. Then, sometimes one has to get a job and pay for our own dreams when we can afford it on our own.
In any case, DO NOT STOP DREAMING! And all the best,
Maria Carmo, Portugal.

keeping lines of communication open among all your loved ones do let them know what are your dreams also know what they are dreaming for you try to listen their point of view...then voice your opinion-why you are following your dreams....whats going on your mind there will be frictions, confrontations, heart breaks,etc....but if yo are persistent and your heart and soul are into your dreams....at last they will understand...and will support you but or all this one has to be confident about one's dreams....have clear goals and willing to go extra mile

SpringPrincessDreams...hhmmm... for me, I believe in myself and my special dream. I believe that one should not only act to achieve something.
SpringPrincessHe should know how to dream, not only plan about it but to believe in it. if today, it seems that your dream is too far way......
SpringPrincessWe should always remember that there's always tomorrow for us to achieve what we want.
SpringPrincessI have a quote that I always have in my mind that's why I still keep on dreaming and believing that i can achieve it.
SpringPrincess"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.”

Update: This post was originally written and published on 20th July 2009. And today 8th July 2011. Nearly 2 years have passed. When I look back and see all the battles I fought with near and dear ones to follow my dreams, trust me I realize it was worth. That day everybody was uncertain about my future. But with the grace of almighty today when I am living life of my dreams; all my near and dear ones are with me, they feel sorry for their earlier non-cooperation and they appreciate my effort. When I written this post I had a hope that one day I will fulfill my dreams and everything will be alright, but today I can suggest you to follow your dreams with more confidence because I did it.
