If you want to be good communicator, just talking skill is not enough, you have to be a good listener too! Strange thing is that from childhood we are taught 'how to read' and 'how to write' and lots of 'how to...' even 'how to write a blog' or 'how to write a tweet', but for an unknown reason we are never taught "how to listen"! But really speaking, effective listening is one of the most essential skill of communication, if not the most essential.
Someone said to me once "If you want to be successful in life, Learning is important, and for learning Listening is important" The person who listen more, not just learn more, but other people tend to listen to him/her more. why?
Imagine yourself having a conversation with someone, and if you see she is not listening to you, all she cares is saying whatever she has to say. Would you like to listen to her? Ofcourse not! So if you really want others to listen to you, first listen to them carefully.
In his revolutionary book 7 Habits of Highly Effective people, Stephen R. Covey written "Most people do not listen to understand, they listen with the intent of reply" so true!
According to him
"There are generally four levels of listening: We may be ignoring another person, not actually listening at all. We may practice pretending, "Yeah. Uh-huh!Right! We may practice selective listening, hearing only the certain part of the conversation. or We may even practice Attentive Listening, paying attention and focusing energy on the words that are being said. But very few of us ever practice the fifth level, the highest form of listening, emphatic listening! It means listening with the intent to understand. It gets inside another person't frame of reference. You look out through it, you see the world the way they see the world, you understand their paradigm, you understand how they feel. "You will find the importance of Effective Listening in virtually every book written on Personal Growth. You will like following two articles by Robin Sharma on listening

Frankly speaking, like many Public Speaker I am also working on improving my listening skill, but the more I am listening to others, I am being surprised to see how fast my fan following is increasing. So what do you think, which of the above five levels you belong to as a listener?
