A long time ago, a fulfilling life consisted of a basically two components. For the farmer, life simply consisted of being able to feed your family and sometimes relax during the spring and summer after you finished your chores. For the blue collar worker, it meant working your way up the corporate ladder to get enough to feed your family, and sometimes take your family out on a vacation. To be able to just survive with people who love you; that was fulfilling in and of itself.
These days, it's largely the same, except vacation time comes a little less often, and families don't always have time to be together when the mother or father are out making a living. Even worse, most families' breadwinners are making a living working for something they don't truly believe in. To me, it's both sad and astonishing. You only get one life and to waste it on merely a job that pays well is truly unfortunate.
A fulfilling life consists of more than just money, material things, and getting a good job. It consists of new experiences, personal growth, and ultimately, selective passion. New experiences (a variety of external influences) provide you with personal growth (reflection upon those experiences). As you go through life, you will one day come upon things about life you love with a passion and things about life you hate with a passion. This is life.
However, SELECTIVE passion creates a fulfilling life, in that you engage in activities that bring you that much closer or allow you to live of off your passion. To ignore the things that don't bring you closer to your passion and to embrace the things that motivate you and drive you to pursue a life that is all your own - this is a fulfilling life.
Be sure to remember though, that a fulfilling life is NOT without its downsides. As with anything valuable to you in life, you must work for it. You must pore blood and sweat into the attainment of your passion. But as with anyone you ask who lives their passion, they tell you that they love to work. They love what they do; because it is all in the name of the life that they wish to create and have already created.
Am I living my ideal lifestyle? I'd say not yet. But you know what? I'm actively working towards it right now. The new experiences, personal growth, and passion is all there. I'm loving almost every minute of it.
